Jesse & Adam Blockton have created a video that shows the late musician John Lennon auditioning & failing on tv show 'The Voice'.

I particularly like the appearance from Bob Dylan.

33rpm LP's collect their pensions

The very first 33rpm LP release in 1948.
The 33 RPM LP record was 65 years old last Thursday.

The long play record (LP) was developed by CBS Laboratories, and introduced to the world by CBS’ Goddard Lieberson on June 20th, 1948.

The Teenbeat New Distractions EP

This is a review of the one vinyl record release that I was involved in. I played keyboards for a band called The Teenbeat & this EP came out in 2000.

One off vinyl dubplate pressing

I've played in a few bands over the years & always aspired to get a record out. Not a cassette, not a CD - a record.

It did happen eventually & i'll post an old review of it later.

It may be that you would just like a small number of copies of your creation on vinyl, just for yourself or friends & family. To find a company who will press your vinyl isn't too difficult but to find somewhere that will press as little as one copy is another matter.

Weaned On CD's - Now Reaching For Vinyl

There were always record collectors who disdained the compact disc, arguing that an LP’s grooves yielded warmth and depth that the CD’s digital code could not match.

But the market largely ignored them. Record labels shuttered their LP pressing plants, except for a few that pressed mostly dance music, since vinyl remained the medium of choice for D. J.s.

As it turned out, that early resistance was not futile, thanks largely to an audience of record collectors, many born after CDs were introduced in the 1980s.

The Swinging Blue Jeans were near the top of Liverpool's rock & roll bands. This album provides the evidence -- ironically, with a little better choice of material, it would rate very close behind the With the Beatles LP as a fresh and brilliant piece of music-making, and even as it stands, it's not too far behind. In order to fully appreciate Blue Jeans a' Swinging, you have to put yourself back in 1964.

Some of you Beatles fans may well of heard of Elephants Memory.

They were John Lennon's loose & ragged back up band on his 'Sometime In New York City' album in 1972.

However, Elephants Memory have a bit more to them than that.

FATS WALLER & HIS RHYTHM
FATS PLAYS FATS

HIS MASTERS VOICE

This is in pretty good condition for a 58 year old record.
I first heard Fats Waller when I bought a 78 shellac disc of 'My Very Good Friend The Milkman' (covered lately by both Eric Clapton & Paul McCartney).
Loved the Fats Waller version & when I saw this for less than a quid I thought I'd give it a go. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

Whilst mentioning the music all of the time I've totally shunned another important element of the vinyl LP package - the artwork.

Robbie Krieger & John Densmore bury the hatchet for Ray Manzarek tribute

John Densmore and the other surviving members of the Doors have been at odds for the last ten years over the legacy of the band and, in particular, the licensing of their music for use in advertising. The situation is the subject of Densmore's new book The Doors: Unhinged.

Cutting A Record At Abbey Road

A YouTube video of a record being cut at Abbey Road Studios.

They are cutting a record from a CD - which defeats the object somewhat, but may just be for the purposes of the demonstration.

Shellac Record Manufacturing in 1942 at RCA

Below is a YouTube video I found on how shellac discs were produced in 1942 at the Radio Corporation Of America.
I'll try to find a video of how they're produced nowadays in contrast......enjoy!

On the MP3 player today.... 13 - Black Sabbath

BLACK SABBATH
VERTIGO RECORDS
2013

I was rather interested in the release of this album - it being the first release with the original members since 1978's Never Say Die. Then I found out that it was only 3/4 of the original members with original drummer Bill Ward. He bowed out of the project in February last year citing a 'contractual dispute'.

I have to say that this put a dampener on my interest in this album as Bill Ward's drumming is one of the things I enjoy most about Sabbath. However replacement Brad Wilks of Rage Against The Machine does okay. He hasn't got the groove, flair or swing that Bill Ward has in my opinion.

A little easier to remember!

Nearing the end of day 2 on the live for vinyl blog & we have had 4 times the amount of hits of day 1.

New Arctic Monkeys Single

Just heard the new Arctic Monkeys single "Do I Wanna Know" on the radio. I have to say that it's pretty good. Apparently its supposed to be a love song!?! - according to the DJ that is. What I heard was more of a broody dark track with some nice dirty guitar riffs to carry it all along.
Have a little listen & see what you think......
I've had a little look online & you can buy an mp3 version of the track but as yet, unfortunately, no 7" vinyl version.

Nick Drake would've become a pensioner today.

Today, influential songwriter & guitarist Nick Drake would've turned 65.  On BBC Radio 2's Folk Show (7pm tonight), Mark Radcliffe dedicates this weeks live programme to Nick.
During his lifetime Nicks career has affected drastically by this depression & reluctance to perform in public. However, 39 years after his death his music is enjoyed by a wide audience.
Nick only recorded 3 studio albums but those albums were stunningly beautiful with much feeling & atmosphere, creating a blueprint for subsequent generations of songwriters to follow.
In the show tonight, Mark Radcliffe is joined by Joe Boyd who reflects of the life & legacy of Nick Drake. Joe produced 2 of Nick albums as well as some for Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band (a particular favourite of mine) & Pink Floyd.

This YouTube video is from a 1969 performance during John Peels radio programme......enjoy!

Cast your mind way back....

As this is the first day of the LFV blog I thought i'd continue this day of firsts by seeing what the first single & album was that you owned. It doesn't matter if you bought them or if they were gifts.
Mine are pretty dire but bear in mind that I was under 5 years old!

My first album : John Lawrenson School Choir
                           40 Favourite Nursery Rhymes
                           Polydor 2384 084
                           1976
This record was badly scratched through being handled by me at toddler age, before I held vinyl at the edges or owned a lint free cloth & some "Into the groove" record cleaner!
I don't remember my copy having a cover. I should imagine that I destroyed it with crayons & child friendly scissors.
As for the music on the album, well, it was just a piano played by the great Mr Lawrenson himself with him leading the choir like an overenthusiastic school master.

My First Single : David Essex
                            Silver Dream Machine
                            Mercury  BIKE1
                            1980
I loved this song when I was a kid. So much so that my Mum & Dad must have picked up on it because they bought me this single for my 5th Birthday.
Although the cover is tatty now, I still own this single & the vinyl itself is still like new. I occasionally give it a spin for old times sake.

And now...a real treat for you from YouTube - Silver Dream Machine performed on The Kenny Everett Show and introduced by Sid Snot!

Toots & The Maytals cancel all shows

An injury sustained by Frederick "Toots" Hibbert, leader of Toots and the Maytals, on May 19 is much more serious than originally thought.

Hibbert was hit with a bottle thrown from the crowd while performing at the RiverRock Festival in Richmond, VA. While he was briefly hospitalized, there appears to be ongoing problems as the groups first cancelled the four remaining dates on their acoustic tour and have now dropped all the remaining dates on their sechedule. Doctors have ordered the action saying "any performances at this time could seriously compromise the artiste's health and well being."

The man who threw the bottle, William Connor Lewis, is expected to be charged with felony assault on July 1.

Here is the full statement from the Toots and the Maytals' camp:

Based on doctors' orders and due to continuing medical issues being experienced by Toots & the Maytals' Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert that are directly related to the head injury received on May 19, 2013 in Richmond Virginia, all future performances of Toots & the Maytals have regrettably been cancelled. This cancellation includes 'Groovin in the Park' in New York (June 30) and the planned 6 week European summer tour (July 3-August 14), This unavoidable decision was made by Toots' medical team as it has been determined that any performances at this time could seriously compromise the artiste's health and well being.

Toots was injured last month when a large vodka bottle was thrown at the stage which hit him in his head while performing at the RiverRock Festival in Richmond. Toots has been undergoing medical tests and treatment since and was forced to cancel the balance of his US acoustic concert tour last month due to continuing medical issues stemming from the bottle throwing incident.

Last week Toots attended the arraignment of William Connor Lewis, the defendant caught on tape and charged with felony assault and public drunkenness after hitting the singer in the head with a vodka bottle during his performance. While the public drunkeness misdemeanor charge was dismissed, the grand jury indictment of Lewis on the felony charge is expected on July 1st.

According to Toots' attorney, Michael R. Shapiro, 'This tragic incident that caused serious injury to Toots is the subject of an going investigation in terms of responsibility. Toots and his management team share with me the view that we should only sue those who we know to have responsibility for this vicious attack. At this moment in time, the bottle thrower, Mr Lewis unquestionably falls in that category and thus the $21M civil action against him. As we investigate the matter fuller and that investigation indicates other responsible parties, I can assure you that we will respond in an appropriate manner to impose legal responsibility for any such actions or omissions upon any such individuals, companies or entities.'

Toots thanks all of his fans worldwide who have expressed their concern and sent their messages and prayers in emails and postings on Facebook.
