For those of you who aren't familiar with this label, Daptone records is a Brooklyn based indie label run by musicians. These artists have the spirit of Stax & Motown. The funk & soul runs through their veins.

The end result being a catalogue of soul drenched recordings that you would think were actually recording back in the days of Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Wilson Pickett & Aretha Franklin.
All of the recordings from Daptone are recorded & mixed by Bosco Mann who ensures there is a hard, true, authentic sound which sets Daptone way above their contempories in my opinion.
This album I bought a couple of years ago direct from Daptone. It arrived in a beautiful shiny gold embossed cover. As it is a double vinyl offering, the cover opens up to give a comprehensive guide to the 23 nuggets & some background to the story of Daptone from its origins in 2003.

Artists featured here, from the Daptone stable, are Binky Griptite, Sharon Jones & The Dap-kings, The Budos Band, Lee Fields, Sugarman & Co, Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, The Sugarman Three & Cynthia Langston.

My favourite track from this collection is 'Stranded In Your Love' by Sharon Jones & Lee Fields. A fantastic track which reminded me of the Otis & Carla tracks of the 60's.

There's just so much atmosphere packed into every groove - its pure joy. The tracks are as tight as anything by Motowns Funk Brothers or the Stax house band.

Daptones mission is to make great soul records the way they used to be made, which is not the way that anyone else makes them anymore. The tracks are recorded on analogue tape & released on vinyl which is how soul music was supposed to be heard. But regardless of what format you choose, quite simply this music is begging & pleading with you to be listened - and I can wholeheartedly recommend that you do.

Below are two YouTube videos. The first being my favourite track from this album 'Stranded In Your Love' by Sharon Jones & Lee Fields. The second is an insight into the first 10 years of Daptone Records.
