The Teenbeat New Distractions EP

This is a review of the one vinyl record release that I was involved in. I played keyboards for a band called The Teenbeat & this EP came out in 2000.

Baxendale / Ricky Spontane / Teenbeat / Abbey Grange: New Distractions EP Vol 1

Label: Lowsley
Format: 7"

A four-track heavy vinyl sampler parading the promising Lowsley Sounds label ! This is the first of many hopefully.

Baxendale kick things off with the best track here, live favourite ‘The Future’, taken from their debut album. Senay sings this one rather than Tim and sounds very accomplished.
The Teenbeat from Merseyside debut with ‘Tonka Toy’, also taken from their forthcoming debut album. Like their name suggests they are very 60’s influenced and ‘TT’ features a ’96 Tears’ style organ riff .
Ricky Spontane are possibly the label’s most well known band simply becausse they seem to have been around long along. Their offering ‘We’re Gonna Rock Paris’ turns into The Tornados’ ‘Telstar’ half way through and is fabulously bonkers.
Finally, things calm down for Abbey Grange who also preview a debut album with the gently charming ‘Urina’. This could be an album worth tracking down if this is anything to go by.
Summing up, an interesting varied record from a promising label.
